By September 2023, the “Magic Cities Germany” achieved a recovery rate of 91.6 percent, and the share of cities in the total overnight volume of international guests reached 43 percent during the same period. Guests from the USA, the UK, and the Netherlands, in particular, are increasingly visiting German cities such as Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, and others.

City travelers are primarily young people who appreciate a wide range of cultural offerings. Many also want to explore the surrounding areas and enjoy nature experiences. According to an analysis of the World Travel Monitor by IPK International 2023, 93 percent of travelers to Germany are interested in combining city trips with nature and landscape experiences.

To meet this need and simultaneously contribute to climate- and environmentally-friendly travel, the German National Tourist Board has developed the “Stay a little bit longer” initiative.
